Photo Gallery from 2009 SOA Symposium

The exhibition area during a coffee break. This year there were almost double the sponsors from 2008.
The Rotterdam World Trade Center, architecturally a modern building but also very functional for events.
Opening keynotes included Thomas Erl, Anne Thomas Manes, David Chappell and Dennis Wisnosky.
The closing event at the conference as the announcement of the SOA Manifesto that was attended by most working group members. (See www.soa-manifesto.org)
Fresh waffles and pancakes were made on-site at the event by a local chef.
Conference attendees awaiting the contest draw for SOA Certified Professional Self-Study Kits that were given away each day.
Thomas Rischbeck, Brian Loesgen and David Chappell at the book launch ceremony for the "Modern SOA Infrastructure" book.
On-site massages were available to conference attendees and speakers.
Cesare Pautasso, co-author of "SOA with REST", discussing the book during the official launch ceremony.
Conference Chair Art Ligthart listening to a keynote after completing introductions.
Free copies of 'SOA Design Patterns' donated by Prentice Hall quickly disappeared.
Drinks were served after each conference day as social activities commenced.
Attendees mixing it up with sponsor representatives.
A conference attendee taking many notes during one of the talks.
SOA Certified Professional self-study kits were made available for review for attendees of post-conference certification workshops.
Dr. Toufic Boubez teaches the SOA Security Specialist Certification workshop. One of four post-conference workshops that were held during the week following the symposium.

Several book publishers were present in the exhibitor's area.
An espresso bar was set up to serve freshly made beverages during all breaks.

Stylish decorations surround the presentation of afternoon snacks in the exhibitor's area.
As he has done for years, the Evil SOA walks among IT practitioners to proliferate confusion and spread misinformation about SOA. Fortunately, he is banished from the SOA community later that day (see the Exorcising the Evil SOA session photos at the bottom of this page).
A lucky winner of a SOA Certified Professional self-study kit.
The on-site bookstore provided a variety of SOA books, including those from Paul C. Brown.
Gert van de Donk, manager of CKC, discusses the final steps to conclude the 2nd International SOA Symposium.

Thomas Erl and Anne Thomas Manes set up the "Exorcising the Evil SOA" session that would prove to be eventful. The Evil SOA enters the room and reacts to challenges from Thomas Erl and Anne Thomas Manes. Thomas Erl confronts the Evil SOA, who is not amused.
Attendees come face-to-face with the Evil SOA. With his end looming, the Evil SOA senses trouble ahead. The Evil SOA is defeated and makes a dramatic exit.
The Good SOA arrives to enlighten a next generation of SOA practitioners. Thomas Erl confers with the Good SOA. Anne Thomas Manes listens as the Good SOA tells her the answer to one of many questions from audience.
The Good SOA has more words of wisdom for Anne Thomas Manes. Clearly identified, by name, as a registrant of the SOA Symposium. Upon the conclusion of the session, the Good SOA receives a round of applause and leaves to spread more goodness throughout the SOA community.
Exorcising the Evil SOA: A Necessary Step Towards Next Generation SOA
Inspired by the movie "The Exorcist", this unique session featured Thomas Erl and Anne Thomas Manes as they engaged a crowd of over 120 attendees to perform the first ever IT exorcism.
It began by inviting the Evil SOA into the room, allowing him to answer questions and state his case. He was then unceremoniously challenged as everyone began repeated chants of "I cast thee out". With each attempt, a rumbling sound (representing the collective "chanting power") became louder and louder until finally, upon the third round of chanting, the room was vibrating and the Evil SOA became noticeably weaker. Strobe lights started flashing and the lights went out as the Evil SOA finally gave up and was officially exorcised from the SOA community.
As light returned, the Good SOA danced into the room and helped answer a series of questions regarding the true nature of service-oriented architecture and service-orientation. The purging of the Evil SOA and the arrival of the Good SOA were intended to inspire everyone that a new, more constructive path has been charted for the SOA community as a whole. Something that was further emphasized by the announcement of the SOA Manifesto on the following day.
